My friend and I are having an argument about comma usage.? Topic: How to write a will in indiana
June 16, 2019 / By Wade
Question: He says commas are not necessary to set off names in a sentence, but I think they are--at least, that's how I was taught...For example-- My daughter, Mary, will be in a musical this week. Are the commas correct in that sentence? Or, this: My wife, Patty, and I went to visit our daughter Jennifer in Saigon to see the movie Indiana Jones. Is that sentence written correctly? Thanks for your help!

Commas are necessary in cases like this: My daughter, Mary, will.. My wife, Patty, and I... visit our daughter, Jennifer, in ... The word enclosed in commas is the same as the one preceeding it. They both have the same meaning and represent the same thing. Either word could be used and the sentence would hold the same information. Jim, my father, likes to talk. My dog, Skippy, is brown. Her book, Of Mice and Men, was ruined.

Thanks, everyone, for the birthday wishes. or Thanks for the birthday wishes, everyone. When you directly address the person or people you're talking to in the sentence, you have to put commas before and after. Examples: How are you doing, Joe? I went to the store, Wendy, to buy you a gift! You did very well on the test, boys and girls. George, I'd like to tend the rabbits.

You are correct. They are necessary. The rule for this usage of commas is called appositive. My wife, Patty, and I went to visit our daughter, Jennifer, in Saigon to see the movie 'Indiana Jones'.

My daughter, Mary, will be in a musical this week. This is correct because you are specifically referring to Mary. You may have more than one daughter. My wife, Patty, and I went to visit our daughter, Jennifer, in Saigon to see the movie, "Indiana Jones".

Don't use them that way. You're writing an appositive (a name that tells exactly whom you are talking about), but when you write it that way, it sounds like you're using it as a direct address (speaking directly TO someone and calling them by their name.) The only time you need the commas is if the info inside the commas is NOT a name. Such as Correct: Mary, my daughter, will be in a musical this week. Correct: My daughter Mary will be in a musicla this week. Incorrect: My daughter, Mary, will be in a musical this week. (This sentence sounds like you're talking to someone named Mary and calling attention to her name.)

Agreed. Your logic is definitely sound. Though, I recommend you stop trying to contend with Theists, well most of them at least. They are young souls, and require such closed minded structure in their lives in order to operate. With out said structure, this world would be for more of a pain in the *** then it already is. Imagine introducing a school full of undisciplined toddlers into a Five Star Restaurant on its most important time of the year and whilst telling them their are Easter eggs to be found under ever table. Look up, not down. Below you is the confined structure of the heavy duty religions, you are beyond the point of requiring a tit to suckle on, and ready to explore the universe. Yes, we adapted to our universe, but the universe had an intention with it all. One must consider that if we are conscious, the universe could also possibly be conscious, though not necessarily in the manner we understand it in our current physical forms. Take a look at a picture of the known universe. Kind of similar to nerves or what have you in the brain. Just saying... All is possible, and all is happening at exactly the same time everywhere in the universe. Some just choose to call that "God" and limit there focus and understanding of what is around them to a very small circle they draw around themselves.
