The term, "Social Networking" misleads people to believe they are social beings. Sitting in front of a computer for hours on end chatting with friends while playing Farmville does not translate into social skills. People become dependent on the technology and forget how to interact with the world around them. Social networks provide an outlet for the socially challenged to express themselves in digital form. Someone's online personality may be completely different from their offline persona, causing chaos when their two "lives" intersect." The negative impact of social networking sites is evident in online dating when the couple meets face-to-face for the first time. Commonly their personalities do not match their self-written descriptions. It is easier to type what someone wants to hear rather than telling the truth. Information posted on social networks is permanent. When someone posts pictures or videos on the Internet they go viral. When the user deletes a video from his or her social network, someone may have posted it on YouTube already. People post photographs and video files on social networking sites without thinking and the files reappear at the worst possible moments. Facebook and MySpace are excellent resources for human resource managers as it offers revealing information about a candidate's true colors. Most job seekers do not set their profiles to private, leaving an open door to their potential managers. Almost every profile contains embarrassing or compromising information to an employer, such as their political affiliation or religion. Younger generations have a complete disregard for their own privacy, opening doors to unwelcome predators or stalkers.

well for one thing social networking sites probably brought about bully awareness.. i think it used to seem like something that wasn't a big deal or people will just grow out of.. violence is just, "so natural." and it might be to an extent but.. teachers wouldn't address it being an importance, it got ignored.. people would suffer and hide or fear walking the hallways, recess is not a break for these kids.. the wrong people would get punished, all sorts of things. but now with this new awareness, now that it is addressed, it's treating the ignorance so hopefully even the bullies can learn something too. how to cope with the negativity? know that as much as it is personal and aimed against you, it is all part of a cycle.. support really helps too.. honestly, i really enjoy a part of the anti-fear and bully awareness campaign cuz it's one of those things that fosters personal growth in a way i've rarely seen. it's like a social education

I agree with you obviously because I'm 14. Putting that aside, Social Networking is a fun way to connect with your friends, upload photos and exchange events, e.g. I use it, because I'm interested on what people are doing and because most friends live in the same area I can find out whats happening in the week. It can be a way to show poeple the other side of you which you may be to embarrissed to show at college, school and so forth. You can send poeple links on sites and give each other cooursework help (not very often to be honest). Its a 'boredom buster' you could say and can take up time. If you add common sense to the mixture your online experience should be safe and fun at the same time. Bit cheesy I know, but trust me schools like that :)

Blondie is right, ignorance is the problem, and Jim is right as well, it is definitly a minority. I also think that the problems created by few should not impact the rules set for the majority of users. Its the same as anything else in society. Depending on where you live, the drinking age is 19, should the age limit be higher or is this acceptable? There are always reasons why some might say it is ok or why it shouldn't be allowed.
