R&P: Survey; Joni Mitchell v Joan Baez?

R&P: Survey; Joni Mitchell v Joan Baez? Topic: Case songwriter
June 15, 2019 / By Richard
Question: Thoughts? Cool answers so far. Peepaw, Birdy, Mslety, and oh but for one Needful Sinner; yeah, really stuck on this one (Janis not included Sinner) between these two. Can't tell who I like more; though my inclination is for Joni ~ I used to dream about Joan as a kid....well (we won't go there) now I see Joni, hear Joni and maybe she "stole me away" from Joan? Hmmm...looking for an epiphany here....why do you all prefer Joni? I picked up on of her CDs once while smack dab downtown San Francisco and the music is still great and sounds better on iPod. Ughhhh! We'll keep this opened a spell....I thumb no person down to Qs I ask and always choose a B/A...in this case no later than Tuesday...promise! Thx you guys! Gerry ...Profile Pic is Southern Cal beach btw....one I used to surf on...I can hear Joni, Joan, Jim, Jimi, and JANIS too....hmmmm need the epiphany on these two though....something (tapping fingers....)...Ughhh! Kelly ~ gee thanks...LOL! That does NOTHING for my personal predicament as I ponder these two silly...well written description that has thrown me further into the abyss of indecision. :)

Oh wow, tough question, I can't choose one over the other...both of them are strong, intelligent beautiful women that I have MAD respect for...tremendously talented songwriters, maybe Joni can sing better, Joan has always been a hero to me...her covers of Bob Dylan's songs are better than his originals, it's like she translates him for the rest of us. Joni- amazing, versatile, multi-talented, made it to the top in a man's world...both of them are [email protected] women and fantastic role models. So, this one is a tie :) EDIT1- Why decide? This is the US - take them both! EDIT 2 - Oh well! You know, life is an ever-changing journey; as wisdom increases we evolve and explore new, unexplored territory ...it's OK if Joni's music works for you at this time in your life. That's what songwriting is about..the really best songwriters touch our souls at different levels. I'm sure Joan would be OK with Joni being your #1. She's awesome like that.

It can be argued that Mitchell is the better songwriter, but the honor of having the better voice would have to be Baez. From her "achingly pure Soprano" (High Fidelity magazine) voice of her early years to her now expressive Alto (she's still performing at the age of 74), Baez could sing it all. No genre of music seems more expressively and powerfully performed than when Baez meets the challenge in her emotional and musical interpretations. She transcended Folk (her initial claim to musical fame) after her first recordings to successfully record songs in at least a half a dozen languages. She has sung such diverse musical genres as Country/ Western, Reggae, Pop, Gospel, Spirituals and other genres too many to name. At one time she easily could have sung Opera as evidenced on her 5th album in her Villa - Lobos selection. Baez' vocal range was at one time phenomenal and could powerfully span several octaves. Her voice has filled arenas and theaters around the world, even at times without a microphone . She can easily sing songs without any instruments for accompaniment and seemingly has an endless vocal palette of colors to enrich the pathos of her song renditions. She has moved me to tears in several of her concerts and has been described as a "singer's singer" for her often unforgettable interpretations of other singer's songs. Her singing can make a listener appreciate even the most complex or poetic of lyrics (as evidenced by her famed Dylan recordings) and could (and still can) make even the casual listener be moved by the sheer beauty of her voice. Sadly I've heard that Mitchell's voice has deteriorated recently due to her life long love of cigarettes, but in her prime she was a unique female voice who's song writing skills was admired by both her peers and the public at large, earning her a timeless place in the pantheon of singer/song writers who's accomplishments still span the decades. In conclusion though aren't we comparing apples and oranges? Both artists are and were extraordinarily gifted and both have earned their righteous place in the history of popular music.

1) When writing, do you prefer to create a new world (or town/city ) from scratch, or base it off of an existing one. base it off a real one, but certainly change any things about it. 2) Imagine you are an innocent person living in Forks, Washington. Overnight, your hometown becomes infested with TwiHard Teens. What do you do? murder them all. no, actually id probably move. but it would feel kinda cool to have everyone coming to your once-unknown town 3) You just realize you had been cloned at birth. Do you try to find your clone, or try to stay away.FIND HER!!! wow thta would be cool - i wish i had a twin! what fun! 4) If there is a parallel dimension, what would your opposite be doing right now? doing hw 5) Do you write better while eating/drinking? What do you eat/drink? i dont write better while i eat or drink, because i get ditracted. im better at writing AFTER i eat or drink. or when i havent eaten in a while. like right now, im on a writing streak and i havent eaten all day :) what do i eat? ummm pretty much anything...my favorite foods are italian and chinese. my favorite drink is just any diet soda ;) 6) What's a strange quirk of yours? IE) I can't write unless I've showered that day. oh me neither! hmm...i write best at night. i have a tendency when quoting a sign or a title to forget to end it. ie, in my current book i wrote "beware of dog signs" istead of "beware of dog" signs. that happens A LOT. and it really bothers me when people use grammatical or spelling errors, like when people write "alot" instead of "a lot" 7) Should you be doing homework right now? yes **lowers head in shame** 8) You have to opportunity to go into a stable relationship with one of your characters. Who is it and why? um none. all of my characters are super bizarre. one is a total arrogant physco, and one is super weak and helpless. i would choose to go out with a character who is kind and caring and funny. but hes too "mary sue" so i dont write about him :) 9) Which one of your characters is most likely to turn into an obsessive ex when broken up with? oh definitely this guy named Caleb. as i mentioned in #8, hes like an arrogant stalker. he thinks hes like really cool and follows this girl around telling her how awful she is. then he starts to fall for her, but she still hates him...its complex. but the point is he never lets go and always gets what he wants. 10) Which one of your characters are you most like? Why? i havent decided on her name, but shes my main characters mother figure. she looks kinda like a younger version of jodi foster. shes really casual, weaing PJs and messy buns. but she gives really good advice to the main character, who ran away from home and now lives with her. shes like the ultimate mom/friend: she cares but she never pesters, she has rules but never strongly enforces them, shes tender but strong...shes a phycologist so she always knows what to say. 11) Does your book have a personification of evil? A "Satan figure"? nope...not even sure if i know what you mean :) you mean a force or something that represents the devil? then no, not yet anyway :) 12) Are you good or bad when it comes to spelling? im pretty good, but every day i just have a list of words i CANNOT for the life of me keep straight. 13) If you were to become a Troll, what would your method be? Cullen4ever was such a successful troll because she bashed HP, what would YOU think would upset people the most? i would go around and say how much i hate twilight and i would hate people who post their hw on here..its so ANNOYING!! 14) Your opinions on the color brown? i have completely average brown hair and eyes. my hair is not chestnut, or dark chocolate, or even fawn. just brown. people say my eyes look like "chocolate" and "dogs eyes" because theyre so dark theyre almost black. i like to wear brown because it reminds me of being warm, but overall, i dont really like it because of the whole hair.eyes thing - i really want bronze hair and green eyes. D: 15) Is there anyone on here ( a regular) that you secretly dislike (NO NAMES, JUST YES OR NO) mehhh...i dont think so...no. BQ OF AWESOMENESS I know many of us have gotten Hate Mail, but what about Love Mail? I think I'm going to send one Love Mail message to one of my contacts a day telling them how amazing they are :D i have gotten hate mail once. i dont know what you consider "love mail" but i get quite a few fans and messages about people who love the Hunger Games because they know im obsessed with those books, too. thats a really sweet idea to send love mail around...i kinda do i guess. i talk to some users :) happy writing and reading! goodluck!
