Do the mentally ill receive treatment for their sickness while in jail or prison or do they go without medication? Why don't they just.? Topic: Schizophrenia research treatment

Question: .......go to mental hospitals? I am asking as someone who is researching this topic. I'm not making any excuses for anyone, but does someone with biploar or schizophrenia or any illness receive treatment while in jail or prison or are they left to be abused and get sicker. It seems cruel and unusual for SOME people to go through this espeically if wrongly accused. Is the situation getting better? I know where I live in CT things are being done for the mentally ill better but where else? Thoughts?

Jails and prisons are supposed to get prisoners their medicine, BUT in much of the country, the jails and prisons are stuck with caring for the mentally ill. It is so sad, but mental hospitals have been closed. The criminal justice system is not set up to care for sick people. It doesn't have funding for the basics. I have seen on Nat. Geo. TV, on a show on jails, that in a Portland, Oregon, mental facilities send difficult patients to the jail! How sick! There are better treatments now, but the mentally ill do not have access. Misguided privacy laws keep families from getting care for mentally ill family members once they reach age 18. Our country should be doing better than spitting the mentally ill onto the street then jailing them for starving or being ill.

Sadly, in a lot of cases, they do go without treatment. It is not excusable and it makes them often unable to participate in their own defense. Before the conservatives decided to cut back massively on mental health care, including in prisons (this happened under Reagan, both in California and when he was president)m inmates were often transferred to mental health facilities at least for evaluation as well as for possible treatment. Some of the prisoners would try to fake it because they were under the delusion that the jail ward of a mental hospital is better than jail. (It's not, other than a little more freedom.) Very few people are skilled enough at faking mental illness to stay on the ward if they don't need to be there. A lot of the conservatives are pushing for private jails - which get paid by head count. So they have every reason to NOT transfer people to mental health facilities. One of the big problems is the massive cuts in community mental health clinics that started in the 80s. So when people with problems are released from hospitals, they have nowhere to go to continue treatment and get support. Thankfully, under the affordable care act, mental illness is treated like any other medical condition. So we may see things improving.

CT prisons treat all prisoners for whatever medical or mental conditions they have. If a doctor prescribes medication, then they get their medication administered to them.

they get treatment in jail, but not when they get out. as a result, they usually end up back in jail. this becomes a cycle
