Why do people think dogs are garbage disposals?

Why do people think dogs are garbage disposals? Topic: Case sensitive order by

Question: Ordered a cheezburger at wendy's today.. they messed up my order, so I took it back to the counter to get it right. They told me I could keep the messed up cheezburger. One lady suggested that I should feed it to my dog. Mind you this is a double cheezburger with extra cheese.. and it had mustard slapped on it- yuck. "Oh I cant feed that to my dog" "why wont he eat it?" "He'd eat it, but then I'd have a mess to clean up" "Why would that make him sick?" "He has a sensitive stomache" "well its just meat.. I dont see why he cant eat that?" I grabbed my fixed burger and walked away, rolling my eyes and moaning.. ya like I want to give my dog a big greasy cheezburger! Its a wonder the thing doesnt make ME sick! Why do people seem to think that dogs are garbage disposals? I think what got me the most was that this lady was wanting to try to argue with me about it, even tho I told her that the dog has a sensitive stomach. The oddest things can cause him to have diarreah! Oh it didnt go to waste.. my brother ate it LOL. He picked the veggies off.

I totally understand what your saying. My sister works at an emergency vet clinic and boy the things people feed their dogs... its shocking how much danger they put their animals in, intentionally or not intentionally! Most dogs just gobble up any food-like item that comes their way (my dog being an extreme case) so people think the dog can tolerate any food. However its definitely become an unhealthy misconception. However, I doubt that those people meant anything by it when they suggested you feed it to your dog. I'm sure lots of them are ignorant about what is good and not good to feed a pet. But, I can also imagine if in a restaurant setting and you screw up someone's food order (and I definitely have experienced this, having been a waitress for over 3 years) you want to say anything you can to keep the situation light and keep the customer from getting too angry. Try not to let your strong beliefs and passions alienate people so harshly when they do something that you find ignorant-- channel your energy into educating them. Maybe you could have looked them in the eye and said courteously and sincerely (along the lines of), "Actually, that sort of food is very bad for your dogs! Even though its meat there are lots of ingredients in this burger that could make a dog very sick. Just thought I'd let you know so your own pup doesnt get sick!" I mean you dont have to make it a long spiel or anything, just try to get the point across in that small moment you have. Getting angry doesnt do much. People will listen to someone who sounds intelligent and is willing to share what they know in an open and sincere manner. Hope this helped!

Hate to admit it, but my dogs are my garbage disposal. This morning's meal of bisquits and gravy for the family left an extra serving which was split between the dogs for an afternoon snack. As far as the fast food cheezburger - I'm sure one of my dogs would have eaten it, but a while back when Miss Dora (service dog) and I were at McD's she outright refused the cheezburger I bought especially for her - and looked at me as if I were insane and trying to poison her. She did manage to scarf down half the fries though. None of my dogs have sensitive digestive tracts... probably because they've all been fed a plethora of things since they were pups. It was nice of them to offer you the burger - they were just going to throw it away and probably thought you might have a better use for it than the garbage.

I have no idea, but it is apparently a very common way to think. I used to have a friend who had a much loved family dog, but they had no idea what was and wasn't healthy for her. I would watch them give her entire sandwiches, big pieces of chocolate cake, bowls of milk and cereal...you name it. She was very overweight. I often heard them wonder aloud, "Katie sure throws up a lot. I wonder what's wrong?" I was much younger at the time and felt that it wasn't my place to correct this dog's owners, but I was always shocked at what I saw. They loved this dog very much and she was treated very well. I think they thought this was all part of showing their love. I honestly think that they just didn't know that what they were doing could be harmful to her. I am not going to pretend that my dogs never get "people food," but I'm careful about what and how much they get. I'd rather not have a sick, obese dog on my hands.

i don't know, but this same thing makes me angry as well. once, a man begged me to take the chicken bones from his meal and give them to my dog. :P of course, my dog has eaten everything from a half pound bag of chocolate, to all of our tupperware, to the sheet metal lining the fence to keep her IN, so she probably would eat anything given to her. and live. she's had a few close encounters (few more hours and she wouldn't be alive...), but people constantly joke about my dog saying that she'll eat anything on the floor so it doesn't really matter. well, ok, but it does matter. in the long run, it can kill your dog, even if you don't notice a difference in their behavior right away. i didn't know my dog was sick until she refused to eat and vomited everywhere. we took her to the pet ER and they said if we had been three hours later, she would have died. in conclusion to my epic rant, dogs are NOT garbage disposals- eating anything fed to them WILL harm them.

My brother is like this. They treat him like more of a dishwasher. It's pretty ignorant. The answer is yeah, basically, ignorance about dogs in general, and what a suitable diet is. Vets can normally give someone the gist of why we feed dogs this stuff called 'dog food', but besides taking your vet to the burger ding, who is going to inform them? EDIT, see lots of 'ignorance' answers! A close second is lack of discipline, bleeding heart kind of stuff. You let him finish off your plate of mac and cheese... you've warped this dog for life. Congrats. What sucks is when your 'friends' come over and feed them stuff. Like it's no big deal. Ignorance at WacArnolds is to be expected, but then these people come over your house.
