Well, first, in the chloroplast, there are light-collecting units called Photosystems that carry out the first part of photosynthesis, the light-dependent reactions. In Photosystem II, sunlight is used to split a water molecule into oxygen, hydrogen ions, and electrons. The oxygen diffuses out of the plant, and the electrons move onto the electron transport chain. In the electron transport chain, the electrons (which are energized) are used to actively transport H+ ions from the stroma in the chloroplast into the thylakoid space. The electrons (which are no longer energized) move into Photosystem I, where they are re-energized to create NADH and FADH2 (forms of energy different from ATP). The NADH and FADH2 move onto the Calvin Cycle. The high H+ ion concentration in the thylakoid space is now allowed to move down the concentration gradient through ATP synthase. As the H+ moves through ATP Synthase, energy is created which converts ADP into ATP. That concludes the light-dependent reactions. In a step-by-step format: Step 1 is Photosystem II, Step 2 is electron transport, Step 3 is Photosystem I, and Step 4 is ATP synthase. In the Calvin Cycle, CO2, with the help of the NADH and FADH2 from the light-dependent reactions, makes glucose. This glucose can then be used for energy or structural support by the plant.
