Can teachers give you homework to go somewhere?

Can teachers give you homework to go somewhere? Topic: Can parents help with homework

Question: I took GCSE photography and I have to take a lot of pictures in my own time, 2 weeks ago my teacher gave us homework to go to a city and take 80 pictures and I was suppose to hand it in on Thursday but I hadn't done it so she said to hand it in on Monday instead or I'll get a detention, but I don't have time to do it. I don't think it's fair as my parents both work and sometimes they work weekends so I have no one to take me, the rest of my live far away so they can't take me and my friends are all busy so I can't go with them and my teacher told me to get the bus on my own but my parents don't want me wondering around a busy city on my own. Can my teacher give me a detention for not doing it because I really don't think it's fair? I get it if I got a detention for not doing homework that was just to write an essay or something because I can do that anywhere but going to a city is asking for a bit too much especially when my nearest city is an hour away. Thanks My parents do help me a hell of a lot with my homework but my mum works 4, 12 hour shifts a week and she can't drive so she can't drive me to a city and my dad can drive but he works 12 hours for 4/5 days a week. When they have both been off work over the past 2 weeks we have been busy, like last Saturday we went to my aunties wedding and thats not something we can cancel just so I can do my homework. A lot of other people in my class have struggled to do it as well because they have been busy. I just think 2 weeks isn't enough time and in that time we have only had 2 weekends which is 4 days off so we really have only had 4 days to do this homework. harwarda, I did explain to my teacher why I couldn't do it on Thursday morning and she just said to do it for Monday otherwise I'll get a detention, I did ask my friend if I could go with her when she did it but she said no because she was visting family after she had finished taking her photos, I am going to hand in some photos that I have took from other times I have visited cities but there is no way that I'll have 80 photos, Ill probably have about 30 at the most which probably won't be good enough.

Unless you parents intervene and say this is too much of a financial burden or have lack of transportation, you would be expected to do this assignment. Get together with some friends and make a day of it. After your homework, take in some sites and have lunch. Make it fun.

Did you explain all this to your teacher? Most teachers would give you an alternate assignment- allow you to take the pictures somewhere closer by. But it seems to me that you could have been a little more creative in completing this assignment. If another student's parents were taking that student to a city to do the assignment, couldn't you have gone along? Your parents wouldn't have minded if you'd been with some parents. What teachers really hate is when students don't talk to them, but then, on the day the assignment is due, just say, "I couldn't do it." Did you talk to her when the assignment was given? Teachers are much happier when you say, "I can't get to a city, but I really want to learn from this assignment. What can I do?" rather than just whining, "I caaaaaan't!" and making excuses.

Yes teachers can give you homework to go somewhere. And while the punishment of detention does seem a little harsh, it is a valid form of punishment. If you think it is harsh, than maybe you should have your parents (and have the other students do the same with their parents) to talk to the teacher and explain that they understand the importance of homework, this particular assignment is a strain.

Time to bring the parents that are too busy to help you in on this assignment. When teachers tell students to do things that parents believe will put their children in dangers positions, then it's time to take the kid out of the middle of it.

I make my own homework. I decide which days to give homework. I decide to skip it if I feel like it. I decide to give more homework if I feel like it. I also always take into account what my students need
