You're right, if this CUNY takes nothing other than GPA and SAT scores into consideration, then it is strange that the lower GPA/SAT student was accepted. At many other colleges, where they take EVERYTHING into account, this may have made more sense. Were there essays or personal statements for the application? If not, then affirmative action is all I can think of as well. Good luck with you!

it is affirmative action to colleges, minorities > white people/asians. i guess they think race overcomes the difference in grades. it sucks for asians because even though they are a minority, their rate of university attendance is really high, so they wont be considered as much of a minority as the others.

You have a couple of misconceptions, but your general idea is fairly sound. The first is that the Big Bang can't really be imagined as an explosion. That's why scientists don't really like the name "Big Bang." (and it was given that name by someone who was trying to make fun of the idea). There is already an idea for an "opposite to gravity" force, this is called Dark Energy. No one is really sure what it is, or if it exists, but they use it to try to explain why the observed expansion of the universe appears to be increasing. Dark Energy is basically the opposite of gravity. If the rate of expansion is in fact increasing, then the fate that you mentioned won't likely come to pass. Your other idea is called the Big Crunch. It says that eventually the expansion of the universe will slow down, stop, and then reverse. But it appears that expansion is increasing, not slowing down. If that's so, then the Big Crunch probably won't happen. Your ideas on how the Big Bang happened from a singularity are pretty close to what some believe happened. One theory that says that the universe goes through constant repeats of "Big Bang", "Expand", "Contract", "Big Crunch" where the energy from the Big Crunch results in the next Big Bang. This is called the Oscillating Universe theory, it is one possibility under the Cyclical model. Another idea is that the Big Bang was caused by two "strings" or "branes" that contacted eachother. The energy from this contact created the Big Bang that lead to our universe. These strings or membranes exist outside of the universe, and create new, independent universes each time they come into contact. This is one part of what is known as String Theory, and I believe that's the currently most favored theory.

Trouble is the universe isn't closed. It's going to expand for ever at an increasing rate due to dark energy (maybe).
