What were the problems with the marketing of electric vehicles? Topic: Case study on marketing problem

Question: supposedly using the "who killed the electric car" documentary as a reference... I watched that part over and over and failed to pinpoint it. The Beastmaster: Um...no? That's my question, that's what the professor wanted answered that I failed to answer so no, don't change my question and tell me I need to rewrite.

Minnie you have an interesting problem. But I am not sure which it might be. Many who see the film would be moved in favor of the electric car. Whenever you write you should know your audience. In this case it will be your professor. So what is unknown here is, was your professor unmoved by the film and is actually asking you to take the stand that GM may have taken? Or is he a fairly astute teacher who is asking you to reach into the movie and come to understand something of marketing and it's parent study of rhetoric. Either way the right approach should help you out. Rhetoric was the study of how to convince others of your perspective. But this study was conducted by looking at examples of effective speeches and writings. Marketing is a modern stepchild. But marketing has little interest in history. It is always asking what is important now. The marketing survey dictates where there is the most interest and works with that. So your first answer presents itself: there was little history of electric in the minds of consumers. Marketing is also very related to sales. It is the problem of how to sell. You are trying to sell your paper for an "A" to your teacher. Everything that companies would do can be looked at through the perspective of marketing as it is a perspective. Other perspectives might be cost, energy use, time required, investment required...BUt since everything can be looked at through the perspective of marketing you can mention almost anything if you draw the connection and relate it to how it affects sales. The vehicle itself was different than what people Were used to. If there were drawbacks like the distance that it could travel then that would be an obvious marketing problem. But if there were positives like a huge demand for the vehicle that could not be met then this is also a marketing problem (you can have the vehicle but the waiting list is 2 years... people will move on and you can't sell it.) A long questionnaire before getting a vehicle is a marketing problem when that is unusual for any other vehicle. When GM crushed the cars that is also a marketing problem for the future as people will wonder if GM will recall their cars and crush them. All you are trying to do is identify the problems. You may not have to say if GM or others solved those problems or not with the EV1. They may not have wanted to.

I would say the biggest problem is people just aren't buying them. That is really why anything takes off or not. If something does not strike enough peoples fancy then it just sits there. Then you have to ask why are people not interested in electric cars. Probably because they are precieved as not having very much power. People also worry "What if I need to use the car and it does not have enough power." Like it runs out of power or you forgot to plug it in which I'm sure would happen. With a car you can just refill it in 2 minutes. With an electric car it is going to take quit a while to charge the batteries. Plus they tend to be pretty pricey for peoples taste. Also people are just more familiar with gas cars. I think in reality it is hard to sell the electric car to people because of the draw backs to them. People say that some how companies are keeping people from buying electric cars, but you know what you can buy them, they are available to buy if you really want one. So then I like to ask "Well how come you don't have one." Then the back pedaling begins. Everyone says people should buy electric cars, but then no one buys them.

yo dis a thesis? , You market what the factory makes. , Your real question may be 'why did the management not build factories for a different product, that would replace the current product?" To that Q. The A: is conservative business sense.

the fact that they couldn't go very far on one charge.. mainly inconvienent for anyone who uses their car for more than 50 mile trips

In college, I am currently majoring in Marketing and minoring in Psychology. My experience so far with both areas is that psychology involves more writing, as you'll be summarizing and analyzing cases and writing your own proposals and experiment summaries. Marketing involves more math than psychology, example of things that you would calculate are customer value and break-even points. I would really suggest considering studying bother, either as a double major or a major in one and minor in the other. Psychology can be a great asset in Marketing since a large part of marketing at any level or stage involved understanding the customer and how they think, something you would gain an understanding of studying psychology.
